“Stunning, chilled lyricism and compositional acuity”—that’s how DownBeat Magazine sums up American trumpeter Chad McCullough. This winter he returns to Belgium on tour, flanked by some of the country’s most distinguished musicians. Together with pianist Bram Weijters, Chad has built a transatlantic musical partnership spanning more than ten years, five albums, and countless performances. You’ll even hear Bram on Chad’s latest record, In These Hills, Beyond, tracked as the culmination of Chad’s recent U.S. tour.
“With In These Hills, Beyond I wanted to explore life’s challenges. My grandfather had just passed away, and much of the music was written with him in mind. At the same time, it’s a celebration of long‑standing friendships—it was a dream to bring everyone together and develop this music live,” Chad explains.
Chad McCullough has firmly established himself on the Chicago jazz scene with his poetic trumpet voice and forward‑thinking compositions. In addition to leading projects like The Charm of Impossibilities and the Atlantic Road Quartet, he’s collaborated with a diverse array of jazz and rock artists and graced some of the world’s most prestigious festivals. His albums consistently earn praise from critics and jazz aficionados alike.
Belgian pianist and composer Bram Weijters is celebrated for his stylistic versatility—from straight‑ahead acoustic settings to free improvisation, fusion, and pop/rock. His synergy with Chad is evident in over 200 performances worldwide.
On bass, Piet Verbist anchors the group with his deep groove and chameleon‑like adaptability, drawing on a rich history with both national and international artists and leading ensembles such as Zygomatik and Secret Exit Trio. Drummer Lionel Beuvens rounds out the quartet with his dynamic flair and technical prowess, having released several acclaimed albums under his own name and becoming a go‑to collaborator for rhythmically sophisticated projects.
