Simeon ten Holt's masterpiece “Canto Ostinato” is one of the most influential and best-selling works of Dutch classical music. It is real minimal music, but compared to its predecessors, it is less mechanical and much more romantic. Some even think that Canto contains one of the most beautiful melodies of the past century. Since its first performance in the late 1970s, Canto has grown into a true cult work that is frequently performed in all kinds of ways and places.
Because the most special thing about Canto is how much freedom it gives the players: more than a hundred sections are prescribed, but the path along these sections is not. This makes each version different from all the others. We, Paul Tiemeijer and Niek Duiven will take a walk in a two-piano performance, not too long, not too short, in which we will emphasize the, in our opinion, most beautiful parts of Canto.
