Regisseur Walter Salles (Central Station, The Motorcycle Diaries, On the Road) is na lange tijd terug als fictieregisseur en maakt met dit krachtige portret voor het eerst in 16 jaar weer een film in zijn thuisland Brazilië, waar de film een regelrechte box office hit werd. De film ging in première tijdens het filmfestival van Venetië en actrice Fernanda Torres won voor haar rol de Golden Globe voor Beste Actrice in de categorie 'Motion Picture - Drama’.
