Our History

The Amsterdam Theater House has deep roots in Amsterdam's history. Located on the historic WG site, where a plague house once stood in the 17th century, our story truly began in 1985 as the Amphitheater in the former lecture hall of the Wilhelmina Gasthuis.

After several transformations – from Gasthuis Werkplaats & Theater (1997-2008) to Frascati WG (2008-2013) – it was taken over in March 2014 under the leadership of Nanda Kling and Gertjan ten Thije and renamed Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis.

Our Current Identity

Today, Het Amsterdams Theaterhuis distinguishes itself as a consciously non-subsidized theater. This independent status is a principled choice – we believe in the power of artistic freedom without reliance on government funding. This allows us to remain autonomous and agile in shaping our programming and vision. Occasionally, we do apply for project subsidies for a youth production.

In the current theatre climate, where many venues rely on subsidies, we're choosing a different model based on entrepreneurship and community support. This means that every performance, course, and initiative is made possible by the direct involvement of our audiences, partners, and participants.

Our Mission

As an independent theatre, we aim to be a vibrant meeting place where young and old, amateur and professional, inspire each other. Our intimate venue seats 115 and serves as a stage for various performing arts.

Through our collaborations with Het Jeugdtheaterhuis, De Theaterkamer, De Presentatie-Academie, GreyVibes, Dansexpressie and others, we have created a dynamic ecosystem where theatre art can flourish in many forms.

We proudly share the rich history of our venue, from medical center to creative incubator. As an independent theater, we continue to innovate and explore new avenues, unhindered by the limitations sometimes imposed by grant providers.

Just as the WG site has transformed over the years, we continue to adapt to the needs of the Amsterdam community, while adhering to our core values: creativity, inclusivity, and artistic independence.
