SEXYLAND PHANTASMAGORIA by Yunil Jeon captures a kaleidoscopic year and a half within the bizarre world of SEXYLAND. Filmed on a childhood camcorder that the artist has used since the age of fourteen, the video combines an amateur home-style aesthetic with cinematically composed shots, creating a holistic vision that shifts between detachment and involvement. Fragments of calm and chaos are integrated in a dizzying montage, mirroring SEXYLAND’s unique energy.
Merging his voice with those of SEXYLAND’s community, Yunil constructs a narrative that blurs the boundaries between memories themselves. Rather than following a linear progression, the video captures the dynamic nature of memory, revealing it to be far less orderly than we often imagine. Inspired by the Korean concept of jumadeung—a rapid sequence of images that flash before one’s eyes at the end of life, as if an entire lifetime is passing by in an instant—PHANTASMAGORIA layers voices and visuals in a jumbled yet rhythmic structure.
The work invites viewers to see themselves within the piece and to find their own meanings, celebrating the beautifully chaotic and surreal essence of life, memory, and SEXYLAND itself.
