This Is Not a Recital
stelt klassiek gitariste Marta Fonseca een onderzoeksgerichte praktijk voor naar de vormen, contexten en publieken die klassieke muziek kan omvatten. Het project is een directe verwijzing naar Magrittes
Ceci n’est pas une pipe
en reflecteert op hoe het klassieke repertoire nieuwe publieken kan bereiken en nieuwe ruimtes kan innemen. Met een repertoire dat varieert van klassieke muziek tot klassieke arrangementen van Portugese muziek, zoals
Foi Deus
van Amália Rodrigues en
Canção de Embalar
van Zeca Afonso, wil het project herdenken wat een klassiek recital precies is en de manier waarop klassieke muziek wordt gepresenteerd opnieuw uitvinden.
“In een klassiek recital kan de muzikant geen sneakers dragen, noch informele of kleurrijke kledij; wanneer er een fout gebeurt, mag hij of zij geen gezichten trekken en de passage niet herhalen; hij of zij mag het publiek niet aankijken tijdens het spelen; hij of zij mag het podium niet te snel of te traag betreden; hij of zij mag niet improviseren (tenzij het in de partituur staat); hij of zij kan niet aan crowd surfing doen. Het is precies dit alles wat mij interesseert om te herdenken.”
Marta Fonseca onderscheidt zich binnen de Portugese klassieke muziekscene als de eerste gitaarstudente in de geschiedenis van het Nationaal Conservatorium van Lissabon die haar studies afrondde met de maximale score van 20. Op 19-jarige leeftijd gaf ze een recital in het Nationaal Pantheon en behaalde ze opmerkelijke resultaten in Europese wedstrijden, zoals de International Guitar Competition of Madrid in 2022 (Publieksprijs) en de Albania International Guitar Competition in datzelfde jaar (Tweede Prijs). Afgelopen februari begeleidde ze de sopraan Leonor Vasconcelos aan de Juilliard School in New York. Momenteel volgt ze een master Klassieke Gitaar aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en werkt ze als begeleidster bij liveoptredens van de Portugese artieste A Sul, voor wie ze ook arrangementen componeerde voor haar aankomende album.

Where does classical music live?
With the series of concerts This Is Not a Recital, classical guitarist Marta Fonseca proposes a research-based practice on the modes, contexts, and audiences that classical music can accommodate. The project is a direct reference to Magritte’s Ceci n’est pas une pipe and reflects on how classical repertoire can reach new audiences and inhabit new spaces. With a repertoire ranging from classical music to classic arrangements of Portuguese music such as Foi Deus by Amália Rodrigues and Canção de Embalar by Zeca Afonso, it aims to rethink what constitutes a classical recital and to reinvent the way classical music is presented.
“In a classical recital the musician cannot wear sneakers, nor informal or colourful clothes; when a mistake happens, they cannot make faces nor repeat the passage; they cannot look at the audience while playing; they cannot enter the stage too fast or too slowly; they cannot improvise (unless it is written in the score); they cannot do crowd surfing. It is all of this that interests me to rethink.”
Marta Fonseca stands out in the Portuguese classical music scene as the first guitar student in the history of the National Conservatory of Lisbon to complete her studies with a perfect 20. She gave a recital at the National Pantheon at age 19 and has achieved notable rankings in European competitions such as the International Guitar Competition of Madrid in 2022 (Public Prize Award) and the Albania International Guitar Competition in the same year (Second Prize Award). Last February, she accompanied the soprano singer Leonor Vasconcelos at the Juilliard School, in New York. She is currently doing her Master’s degree in Classical Guitar at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and works as an accompanist for the Portuguese artist A Sul in live shows, for whom she has composed arrangements for her upcoming album.
